This park is 2000 km large, which makes it the biggest geological Park in Europe.
55 towns and villages in both departments Var and Alpes de Haute Provence joined together to protect rocks, fossils and countryside, and so became the guardians of the earths memory.
On the Col de Leques, at 8 km from Castellane you can visit the Vallée des Sirènes fossils. On this geological deposit you can see hundreds of fossils belonging to the ancestors of dugongs and see cows. Because of the quality and the abundance of the fossils dating 40 million years back this site is unique in the world. You can reach this spot by a nice 50 minutes long walk. (the path of the mermaids).
