| Castellane, the entrance of the Gorges du Verdon, on the
"Route Napoléon" 1539 inhabitants - altitude 723 m - Sub-prefecture since 1799 When you come in sight of Castellane with its little houses squatted at the foot of a 184m high calcareous crag, it looks as if it has been placed in the safe custody of Notre Dame du Roc Chapel which rises at its top. There you can behold one of the most striking sites of Haute Provence. Its narrow streets punctuated with doors, small squares and fountains, its great square with centenarian plane-trees give Castellane its typical "provençal" style.
